Growing up in the country there were always dogs and cats running around
outside of my parents house. Once I became an adult and moved into the real
world I just didn’t have the time to take on the responsibility of owning my
own pet. About 5 years ago a small kitten somehow found its way in my
garage. Looking very scrawny and sick I took her in just to get her back to
good health. Little did I know that we were bound to be together from that
day on. A few years ago I was in a car accident that left me wheelchair
bound and unable to do much on my own. With no family close by even the
smallest amount of care my cat needed was almost impossible for me to do.
The thought of giving up my friend was almost impossible to even consider
but I just didn’t know what else to do.

I ran across PALS on line and called just to see what they would tell me. I
had already made several calls to other organizations and was brushed off
before I could even finish my conversation. But with PALS there was no
interruption. I told Kevin my situation and after less than two days
received an application. While he explained before hand that PALS program
did not provide individual home care for pets because there was only one
staff member, he did research and find someone who would give one hour every
other day to come empty the litter box and any other small task that needed
to be done. He has even come himself when volunteers were unable. I know
this is outside of the basics that PALS provides which is exactly why
organizations like this are so needed in every community. People now days
are always in such a hurry and do want to help as long as it doesn’t require
too much time from their busy schedule. My tinker bell provides me with so
much comfort and it would kill me if I didn’t have PALS to help me. I don’t
consider PALS just an organization that helps provide me with services but
friends that go above and beyond to see that my cat gets everything needed
to be healthy and remain with me where he is loved.

Always Grateful

I’m writing this letter on behalf of my beloved husband who passed away 6
months ago to cancer. My husband’s battle with cancer was a long and hard
struggle. We were both on disability and barely able to make ends meet even
way before we received the news of his illness. My husband was never much
for words or expressing emotions. He grew up in a time when men who showed
emotions were considered weak but I know he loved me and he showed it all
the time through his actions. We had two dogs that had been with us for
over ten years when my husband’s diagnosis was confirmed. Our male dog Sam
was especially partial to my husband. Always greeting him at the door and
always at his feet when relaxing in front of the tv.

After going through chemo with no progress my husband seemed to decline into
a deep depression. During those days the only time my husband would show
any emotion was when Harlem would walk into the room. He then seemed to
brighten up a bit and smile as Sam licked his face or hand.

Because we were already on disability we had signed up for the PALS program
4 years earlier with Kevin. Every month we would get food and whenever it
was time for the boys to get their shots, Kevin would call to see if we
needed him to come take them for their appointment. My husband was at home
when he passed away with both of our dogs laying by his side. They never
moved from that spot the whole day before my husband passed away. I know
that without the support of PALS my husband last memory of his healthy dogs
by his side could not have been possible. There isn’t any words that can
describe how thankful and blessed we both have been by having such an
amazing organization available for us. Still today my boys are strong and
healthy even as they are getting up there in age I know that as long as
people like Kevin and everyone else involved with PALS is around my
companions will continue to have the life they deserve.

Greatest Gratitude

When asked to write a few lines about how the PALS program impacts my life
with my best friend Henry, my only concern was how could I express my love
and gratitude to such an amazing organization in only a few lines.

I am a 89 year old very private women and never ask for handouts but with
the small amount of money I receive from social security I barely make
enough to cover my bills and myself much less my pet. On many occasions I
went without eating so that Henry had food. Henry was already a year over
due for his shots and heartworm test and I had no idea how I was going to
get the money to get this done. So when a friend told me about PALS I gave
in to my stubborn pride and called them.

I have dealt with a lot of state run agencies for one thing or another
always with the same result, feeling like a was a burden to the person on
the other end of the phone and never feeling that I had gotten the
information I had asked about nor feeling any sense of relief.

When I ended the call with PALS I felt not only relieved but overjoyed that
their was an organization out there that treated me like a human being and
made me feel like it was a pleasure helping me figure out a solution to
keeping Henry where he belonged, with me

I have no doubt that the reason I am still alive today is because of my dog.
He gives me the motivation to get out of bed every morning knowing that he
depends on me. He makes me feel needed and loved. Thank you Kevin and PALS
for being a big part of our lives.

There is nothing worse than knowing that you have a pet that needs care and you cannot provide because your disability check is gone before you even receive it. This was my dilemma seven years ago when I happened to hear about Pets Are Loving Support. My pet was two years old when I was diagnosed with an illness and while it has been manageable with several surgeries and medications, I cannot work, drive a car or even do the simple things like walking in my yard. Knowing that my pet needs me has kept me going and keeps me focused on not just my needs but his as well. The day I contacted Pets Are Loving Support I was at my wits end. My pet Sammy had not had shots for over a year and I could not find a veterinarian anywhere that would even consider taking a payment plan. No one cared. When I called I was so frantic that I couldn’t even talk without crying. But Kevin asked me to calm down and just explain my situation. Before the call was over not only did he arrange to bring me an application but also a small bag of food to get me through until the application was reviewed. Within two weeks he had me an appointment with the Humane Society and my Sammy got his shots, heartguard and flea medication. Even though he is now going on ten years old he is still very frisky and happy. If it wasn’t for this organization and all they do I know Sammy would not be here today. Not only have they enriched my pet’s life but mine as well.
